Trial of Timed Pedestrian and Cycle Zone in Barrow

A section of Farm Street in Barrow is set to become car-free at key times of the day as part of a new trial aimed at improving safety for children, pedestrians and cyclists.

Westmorland and Furness Council has confirmed that a timed pedestrian and cycle zone will be introduced from April 22nd. Covering a 60-metre stretch of the road near local schools.

The restrictions will apply on weekdays during term time. With vehicles banned between 8:20am and 9am, and again from 3:10pm to 3:50pm.

The move is designed to reduce traffic during busy school drop-off and pick-up periods. Creating a safer environment outside Barrow Island Community Primary School and Bram Longstaffe Nursery School.

Who Is Still Allowed Through?

While most vehicles will be restricted during the set times, several key exemptions will remain in place.

Emergency services, including fire, police and ambulance vehicles, will be able to pass through the zone at all times. Essential services such as bin lorries and road maintenance vehicles are also permitted.

Local bus services will continue to operate as normal, ensuring residents can still access public transport routes.

School Access and Disabled Provision

Special arrangements have been made to ensure pupils can still travel safely to and from school.

School buses will be allowed access to the zone, along with vehicles displaying a valid disabled badge when picking up or dropping off children.

This is intended to balance safety improvements with accessibility for families who rely on transport support.

Funeral Vehicles Also Exempt

Vehicles involved in funeral services from properties within the zone will also be allowed access during restricted times.

The council said this exemption is in place to ensure minimal disruption for families during sensitive occasions.

Residents Asked to Share Feedback

The scheme is being introduced as a trial, with the council keen to gather feedback from local residents, parents and businesses.

Anyone with comments or concerns is encouraged to contact the traffic team by emailing TrafficTeam.Barrow@cumbria.gov.uk.

The trial will help determine whether similar traffic restrictions could be introduced in other areas to improve road safety around schools.
