Two Men Charged After 6.5kg Cannabis Seizure in Cumbria

Two men have been charged with drug supply offences after police allegedly found 6.5kg of cannabis during a stop in Cumbria.

Robert David Clarke, 34, of Smith Square, Doncaster, and Nam Tran, 34, of no fixed abode, appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Barrow on June 5.

Both men are charged with possession with intent to supply cannabis, a Class B drug.

The charge states they were allegedly caught with 6.5kg of cannabis in their possession at Temple Sowerby on June 4.

Clarke is also accused of being in possession of approximately £15,000 in cash and has been charged with a further offence of acquiring, using or possessing criminal property.

Both men are next due to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on July 6 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

Men Appeared Before Magistrates

The case was first heard at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Barrow.

Clarke, from Doncaster, and Tran, who is listed as having no fixed abode, appeared before magistrates after being charged in connection with the alleged cannabis seizure.

The allegation relates to Temple Sowerby, a village near Penrith and close to the A66, on June 4.

No pleas were reported at the magistrates’ court hearing.

The case will now move to Carlisle Crown Court, where the next stage of proceedings will take place.

Cash Allegation Against One Defendant

As well as the drug supply charge, Clarke faces a separate charge linked to money allegedly found during the incident.

He is accused of acquiring, using or possessing criminal property.

The charge relates to approximately £15,000 in cash.

Criminal property offences are commonly linked to allegations that money or assets are connected to crime, although the matter has not yet been proven in court.

Tran faces the single charge of possession with intent to supply cannabis.

What Happens Next

The two defendants are due to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on July 6.

The hearing will be a plea and trial preparation hearing. This is where defendants are usually asked to enter pleas and the court considers how the case should move forward.

If not guilty pleas are entered, a timetable may be set for trial. If guilty pleas are entered, the court may move towards sentencing at a later date.

At this stage, the charges remain allegations.

Both men will be dealt with through the court process, and no findings have yet been made.
