Appeal for Witnesses After Ulverston Squirrel Bench Destroyed

Ulverston Town Council has appealed for witnesses after one of the town’s squirrel benches was destroyed.

The bench, located at the bottom of Flan Close, was reportedly hit by a vehicle travelling along Town Bank Road. The incident is understood to have happened in the morning, at around 10am.

The town council is now asking anyone who saw what happened, or who may have information, to come forward.

Bench Hit by Vehicle

The damaged bench was one of Ulverston’s distinctive squirrel benches, which have become a recognisable feature around the town.

The council said the bench at the bottom of Flan Close was hit by a vehicle travelling along Town Bank Road. Following the incident, the bench was left destroyed.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has details that may help identify the vehicle involved, is being asked to contact Ulverston Town Council.

A Familiar Feature in Ulverston

Ulverston’s squirrel benches are well known locally and form part of the town’s wider public seating and street furniture.

Benches like these are more than just places to sit. They are used by residents, walkers, visitors, older people, families and anyone who needs a short rest while moving around town.

Public benches can also add character to an area, especially when they have a design that links to the identity of the place. In Ulverston, the squirrel benches have become a small but familiar part of the town’s streets and open spaces.

Why the Council Is Appealing

The council’s appeal is aimed at finding out exactly what happened and identifying anyone who may have seen the incident.

Because the bench was hit by a vehicle, details such as the time, direction of travel, vehicle type, registration number or dashcam footage could be useful.

Even small pieces of information may help the council understand how the damage happened and what steps need to be taken next.

How People Can Help

Anyone who was in the area at around the time of the incident is being encouraged to think back and check whether they saw anything unusual.

Drivers with dashcam footage, nearby residents, pedestrians or anyone who noticed damage after the event may be able to help.

Ulverston Town Council is asking witnesses to get in touch directly with any information.

For now, the council’s message is clear: if you saw what happened to the squirrel bench at the bottom of Flan Close, or know who may have been involved, please contact the town council.
