Sono Wright, a 48-year-old woman from Ulverston, was fined £101 after walking along the A590 carriageway near the Swan Inn. The incident happened at around 9:50pm on February 10. Police were alerted by a member of the public who saw her walking in the road.
Vehicles had to swerve to avoid hitting her. Wright continued walking until police stopped and arrested her at the Blue Light Hub. She later admitted to wilful obstruction of a highway at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on March 16.
Details of the Incident
Prosecutor Lee Dacre explained that vehicles were forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision with Wright. Despite this, she kept walking in the middle of the carriageway, which posed a danger to herself and drivers.
Defendant’s Explanation
Wright’s representative, Andy Gallagher, shared background information on her situation. Wright was trying to get a lift to Barrow to access the Nationwide Building Society after losing her bank card. Gallagher noted she was not thinking clearly at the time.
He also mentioned Wright has long-standing mental health issues and that this was her first court appearance in five years. She believed stopping traffic in the road was easier than doing so from the pavement, reflecting her mindset during the incident.
Court Outcome
The magistrates fined Wright £40 for wilful obstruction of a highway. She was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £16 victim surcharge. Wright lives on Pepperpot Drive in Ulverston and receives Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments (PIP).
Summary
The case highlights the risks of walking on busy roads and the importance of mental health support. Thankfully, no accidents occurred during the incident. The court’s decision took into account Wright’s personal circumstances and mental health challenges.
