The Westmorland and Furness Council is launching the Warm Homes: Local Grant to improve energy efficiency in Barrow. This initiative targets up to 800 homes by March 2028, focusing on those in fuel poverty.

Households in Barrow, particularly those with low income and energy-inefficient properties, will be prioritised. A report indicates that around 15% of households in Westmorland and Furness were classified as fuel-poor in 2020, a figure likely to have increased due to rising energy costs.

Environmental Impact

This programme not only aims to alleviate fuel poverty but also contributes to local net-zero goals. Residential properties account for about 20% of the UK’s carbon emissions, making energy efficiency upgrades crucial.

Funding and Eligibility

The grant will cover various energy-efficiency measures, including insulation and low-carbon heating systems. However, the specific upgrades will depend on national guidelines and the condition of each home.

Residents in privately owned or rented homes will soon be able to express interest via the council’s energy-efficiency grants webpage, once the eligibility checker is operational.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the positive aspects, strict funding criteria set by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero may limit eligibility. The council is tasked with ensuring a fair application of these rules across different housing tenures.

Community Engagement

Recent consultations regarding the council’s Housing Strategy revealed strong community support for addressing fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency. This feedback will guide the implementation of the Warm Homes project.

Next Steps

The Communities and Environment Scrutiny Committee will convene on April 29 to discuss the report and its implications for the community. Their focus will be on monitoring the project’s impact as it unfolds.
