West Cumbrian Golfers Raise £22,000 for Charities

A charity golf event in West Cumbria has raised £22,000 for good causes.

The event was held at Workington Golf Club on May 9th. And brought together 170 golfers for a day of sport, fundraising and community support.

Now in its fourth year, the event has become a major annual fundraiser. It is organised by a volunteer committee who spend around 12 months planning the day.

Famous Faces Join the Golf Day

Several well-known guests took part in this year’s event.

They included former Wales international footballer John Hartson. Former British Lions rugby union captain Finlay Calder, and YouTube personality Kevin Lynch, also known as Kevin Lynch The Referee.

Their support helped bring extra attention to the event and its fundraising work.

Money Raised for Prostate Cancer UK

The main charity supported by the event is Prostate Cancer UK.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Around one in eight men will get the disease during their lifetime. The risk is higher for men over 50 and for those with a family history of prostate cancer.

Early diagnosis is important because prostate cancer is often easier to treat when it is found sooner.

Organisers said the fundraising will also help make PSA testing available at an early stage for those who wish to be tested.

More Than Just One Event

The golf day itself raised more than £14,000.

The final £22,000 total was reached with support from other fundraising events. Including a sporting dinner and a Christmas raffle held since July last year.

Over the last 12 months, the golf day and linked events have raised £17,000 for Prostate Cancer UK and other charities.

Local Charities Also Supported

A donation of £15,000 has been made to Prostate Cancer UK.

A further £3,500 is being shared between several other charities. Including Children with Cancer, Andy’s Man Club, Alzheimer’s Society, Arthritis UK, Parkinson’s, Meningitis Now and the Epilepsy Society.

This means the money raised will support a wide range of causes, from cancer care and mental health to neurological conditions and support for children.

Volunteer Team Behind the Event

The event was organised by Andrew Clemence, Howard Nicholson, Kelly Morgan, Carl Metherell and Ken Harper.

They were supported by a large number of sponsors, golf clubs, businesses and local people.

Myers & Bowman provided vehicles to help make the first tee feel special for players.

Sponsors included Westinghouse, Amentum, Atkins Realis, William King Construction, NRL, Altrad, Maryport Bodyworks, Myers & Bowman, PTS, Unite, GM and Johnny Graham.

Organisers also thanked Richard Leach and Richard Mattinson, from Whitehaven Golf Club, Alan Oliver, from Silloth Golf Club, hole sponsors, and everyone who donated auction items and raffle prizes.

A Strong Community Effort

The success of the golf day shows the strength of community fundraising in West Cumbria.

With 170 players, celebrity guests, local sponsors and a year of planning behind it, the event has raised a major amount for charities that support people across the UK.

Organisers said the support and generosity shown by everyone involved made the donations possible.

The event is now expected to continue building on its success in future years.
