Workington Man Jailed for Four Years After Robbing Convenience Store
A Workington man has been jailed for four years after robbing a convenience store while armed with a hammer.
Ryan Langcake, 35, of Northside, Workington, was sentenced this week, on May 5th, after being convicted of robbery. The incident happened in the Station Road area of Workington late on November 1, 2025.
Police said officers received a report of a robbery involving an offensive weapon. CCTV later showed Langcake jumping over the shop counter, pushing the till onto the floor and hitting it with a hammer as he tried to open it.
What Happened During the Robbery?
The court heard that Langcake entered the convenience store late at night.
CCTV showed him going behind the counter before targeting the till. He pushed it onto the floor and struck it with a hammer.
When he could not open the till, he jumped back over the counter and took a tub containing between £200 and £300 in cash.
CCTV Helped Track His Movements
After leaving the store, Langcake was seen on CCTV changing his clothing behind a wall.
He then entered a takeaway.
Police said he had made deliberate efforts to avoid being identified. However, officers were able to track his movements and gather the evidence needed to bring the case before the courts.
Police Say Robbery Will Not Be Tolerated
Detective Sergeant Peter Schofield said robbery is a serious offence and “will not be tolerated in Cumbria”.
He said Langcake had tried to avoid being identified, but officers were able to track him and secure the evidence needed.
He also thanked witnesses who came forward, along with the officers involved in the case.
A Serious Crime for Local Businesses
Robberies can have a serious impact on shop workers and local businesses.
Even when no injuries are reported, incidents involving weapons can leave staff and witnesses shaken. They can also lead to extra costs for businesses through damage, lost money and security concerns.
In this case, police said witness support and CCTV evidence helped officers build the case.
Offender Brought to Justice
Cumbria Police said they remain committed to working with communities to bring offenders to justice.
The four-year sentence means Langcake has now been jailed for the robbery, which took place in Workington in November 2025.
