Egremont man jailed after weapons found during police raid

An Egremont man has been jailed after police found offensive weapons during a raid at his home.

Russell Roberts, 43, was sentenced to four weeks in custody after being charged with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a private place.

Weapons to be destroyed

A deprivation order was also issued by the court.

This means the weapons and other items seized by officers will now be destroyed.

Police raided Egremont property

The weapons were discovered when officers carried out a warrant at a property in Egremont on June 17.

The operation involved officers from Copeland Neighbourhood Policing Team. They were supported by Cumbria Police’s Tactical Support Group and the Constabulary Nuclear Estates Team.

The raid formed part of Neighbourhood Policing Week. The campaign saw officers carry out patrols, enforcement work and community visits across Cumbria.

Roberts was charged with two weapons offences following the search. Police have now confirmed that he received an immediate four-week prison sentence.

Further warrant carried out in Whitehaven

Officers also searched a separate property in Whitehaven during the week of action.

Cannabis was seized from that address, although police did not announce any charges in connection with the Whitehaven search.

Cumbria Police said the warrants were part of its continued work to target crime and disrupt offending in local communities.

Residents with information about crime or antisocial behaviour can contact Cumbria Police online or by calling 101. People should always call 999 when a crime is taking place or someone is in immediate danger.
