Maryport street closed after police vehicle crash involving two young people
A young person is in a critical but stable condition after a crash involving a police vehicle and two pedestrians in Maryport on Saturday evening. The collision happened on Senhouse Street at 5.58pm on April 18th. With both injured pedestrians described by police as children of secondary school age.
Cumbria Constabulary said both children were taken to hospital. One suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital, while the other had minor injuries and has since been discharged.
Police say vehicle was not responding to emergency
Police have said the vehicle involved was not in pursuit and was not responding to an emergency incident at the time of the collision.
That detail is likely to be a major focus as investigators work to establish exactly what happened on the street in the minutes before the crash. Police have not yet released any further information about how the collision occurred.
Road remained closed as enquiries continued
Following the crash, Senhouse Street remained closed while officers carried out investigative enquiries. Police said the circumstances of the collision are being fully investigated.
Cumbria Constabulary also confirmed that the incident was immediately referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, describing that as standard practice in this type of case.
Appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage
Police are asking anyone who saw the collision, or who may have dashcam or other camera footage, to come forward. Officers have asked people to quote incident number 184 of April 18th when getting in touch.
Superintendent Sarah Jones said the force’s thoughts are with the two young people involved and their families. She added that officers are continuing enquiries to fully understand the circumstances.
Serious incident shocks town
The incident is likely to cause concern in Maryport, particularly because it involved two young pedestrians and happened on a town street early on a Saturday evening. At this stage, police have released only limited details, with the investigation still at an early stage.
