Armed police remain at Ulverston house after overnight standoff with noxious substances
Armed police remain at a house in Ulverston following an overnight standoff involving a man reported to be in significant distress.
Emergency services were called to a property on Dale Street shortly after 7.30pm on Thursday, June 18.
The man remained inside the house until early Friday morning. While a police cordon and evacuation continued around the surrounding area.
Cumbria Police said emergency services had identified the possible presence of a firearm inside the property. A substance believed to be noxious was also reportedly being released from the address at intervals.
Nearby homes have been evacuated as officers work to protect residents and safely resolve the incident.
Update: Man is now in custody and residents return home.
Armed officers remain at the scene
Armed response officers have been stationed in the area since Thursday evening.
Police said assessments were continuing and warned that the operation could take some time due to the potential risks inside the property.
A wider evacuation was introduced because of concerns for the man’s welfare and the safety of people living nearby.
Residents affected by the evacuation are being accommodated by relatives and friends or in nearby facilities.
Chief Superintendent David Pattinson said the force understood the concern and disruption caused by the emergency response.
He confirmed that the cordon would remain in place while specialist officers continued their work.
Potential firearm and noxious substance
Police have not confirmed whether a working firearm has been recovered or directly seen. However, officers believe there may be a weapon inside the house.
The reported release of a potentially noxious substance has created an additional risk for emergency workers and neighbouring properties.
No details have yet been released about the nature of the substance or whether anyone has been harmed by it.
The man was described as being in a distressed state when the incident was first reported.
Police have not released his identity or provided further information about the circumstances leading to the standoff.
Residents asked to avoid Dale Street
Road closures and the police cordon are affecting access around Dale Street and the nearby area.
Members of the public have been asked to stay away while the emergency operation continues.
Anyone in the area who has concerns can speak to an officer at the cordon or contact Cumbria Police by calling 101.
Chief Superintendent Pattinson thanked residents for their patience and support.
He said police recognised the impact on evacuated households, people affected by road closures and those concerned about relatives or friends living nearby.
The incident remained ongoing on the morning of Friday, June 19. Further information is expected once officers are able to safely enter the property or bring the standoff to an end.
